NEW SHOW: "FIGURES AND FORCES"
OCTOBER 6 - 31, 2008
CounterpArt Gallery in Lowell MA presents "Figures and Forces," paintings and drawings by Calvin Thomas and
Jeffrey Lipsky (aka Filthy Fluno). The pieces in this show range from Thomas' female figures in motion to Lipsky's interpretations of people (avatars) from online virtual worlds like Second Life (tm). The figures in all of the artworks for this show are in constant interaction with natural and synthetic forces. On the gallery's multiemedia system will be the interactive artworks and music of select artists from the metaverse.

Click here to teleport to the show in Second Life!Calvin Thomas is a painter from Lowell MA who's painting style is reminiscent of Degas, Michaelangelo and Klimt. An old school painter who mixes his own tempera paints, Thomas' recent works focus on female figures in motion. He has exhibited his paintings throughout Massachusetts and is one of Lowell's most popular contemporary artists.
Jeffrey Lipsky lives in Tyngsboro MA and has a BFA in Fine Arts from Montserrat College of Art. His style has been compared to Basquiat, Picasso and Kline. His use of online virtual worlds to inspire and exhibit his artwork has caught the attention of collectors and curators from around the world. His abstract avatar portrait paintings in this show demonstrate a stylistic growth in Lipsky's pastel drawings from his last few exhibitions.
Boston's own magician/performance artist
Tuna Oddfellow (Fish Fishman) will be on hand the night of the reception performing mixed reality magic and mystery on the video screen accompanied by his beautiful assistant Shava for everyone's enjoyment and intrigue. Also on hand the night of the reception,
Komuso Tokugawa, boogiewoogie blues musician from Tokyo, Japan will be performing through Counterpart's mulitimedia system.
Juel Resistance, bad ass acoustic folk musician will also be playing her music during the opening.
Digital Artist
Esch Snoats (Todd Tevlin) also exhibits 3 pieces that reflect on virtual world's culture and design. Tevlin is an artist from St. Louis as well as designer of one of Second Life's premiere arts and music communities,
Artropolis.
Hyperformalist Art founder and artist
Dancoyote Antonelli will exhibit "Hostile Space" on the gallery's video projector and sound system the night of the reception. HOSTILE SPACE is a response to the Selavy Oh suspension. What Selavy did accidentally in SL is being done deliberately to foreground the issue of whether it is correct to consider an avatar to have personal space. In the case of Selavy, it was literally an accident and on a known free-for-all art sim. It was unconscionable to suspend Selavy from Second Life for the accident. The Hostile Space installation pokes gentle fun at the whole concept of getting bonked on the head. So look out! Stuff will fall on your avatars head. Mutant Hossies in the bottom part the installation add a non sequitur element that also references Pavig Lok’s reassembly of ant parts The Mutant Hossies are reassembled parts of a horse made by Nomasha Syaka and while not abstract like most of my work, are more in the spirit of the coming holiday. Hostile Space has layers. Is the space hostile to the viewer? Is Second Life hostile to artists? And WTF are these surreal Mutant Hossies doing there anyway?
Also on display on the video projection is two mixed media pieces by Fei Bourdville. Click here to see them and learn more about this talented upcoming artist!"Figures and Forces" will be on display by appointment from Oct 6 - 31 or stop by the gallery day or night and Jeff or Calvin might even be there setting up the show. The opening reception from 7 - 11 pm on Saturday October 25 will be a mixed reality mashup of fine art, interactive digital creations, live music, wine, food and friends. Call 781-541-0470 for more information.

Thanks to the Arts League of Lowell, Downtown Business Coordinator Christopher Samarase and the owners of 128 Merrimack St in Lowell, I have been granted the use of this gorgeous space to make a real life extension of my online virtual gallery in Second Life.
This is the first art gallery in history (if you know one before this, please let me know) to break through the boundaries of virtual reality and rezz into the real world! We're not just talking about an exhibit or two...Filthy's counterpART Gallery (FCG) will be dedicated to the exhibition of fine art as well as present mixed reality mashups of art, music, new media, and exhibitions that bring together both local and international artists. FCG's mission will also promote an inclusive community of artists, local businesses, educators, and virtual technology enthusiasts.
